Road Lighting: Infrastructure Engineering for Urban Safety and Efficiency
Lighting public roads and urban environments is a fundamental pillar of citizen safety and sustainable development. A high-efficiency outdoor lighting project must be designed under the strictest criteria of the EN 13201 standard, ensuring optimal visibility for drivers and pedestrians, minimising glare and reducing environmental impact through state-of-the-art smart control technology and energy efficiency.
Technical Specifications and Road-Grade Performance
Public lighting faces extreme operating conditions and long switch-on cycles. Therefore, road engineering solutions must integrate high-resistance components to ensure a long life cycle and low maintenance cost (OPEX):
- System Efficacy and Energy Management: Equipment with efficiencies exceeding 150 lm/W, allowing drastic reductions in electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. Programmable drivers are included to configure night dimming curves (Multi-step) to adjust the luminous flux according to low-traffic hours.
- Precision Optics and Photometric Classes: The use of high-purity asymmetric lenses maximises the spacing between columns. Luminaires must comply with luminous intensity classes G3, G4 or G6 to guarantee glare control (limitation of disability glare TI).
- Surge Protection (SPD): Given the exposure to atmospheric discharges and mains transients, it is mandatory to integrate surge protection devices of 10kV / 10kA as standard.
- Tightness and Mechanical Resistance: Die-cast aluminium enclosures with IP66 protection rating and IK09/IK10 impact resistance, with surface treatments resistant to corrosion (C5-M).
Sustainability and Night Sky Protection
Compliance with energy efficiency regulations for outdoor lighting installations is key to mitigating light pollution:
- Upward Light Output Ratio (ULOR): Designs with 0% ULOR, eliminating direct light emission to the upper hemisphere and combating nighttime skyglow.
- Colour Temperatures and Photobiology: Availability of warm colour temperatures (2200K, 2700K, 3000K) and PC-Amber technology for environmentally sensitive areas or natural parks, minimising insect attraction and blue light dispersion.
Road Classification and Technical Requirements (EN 13201)
| Lighting Class | Type of Road | Average Luminance (L) / Illuminance (E) | Uniformity (Uo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| M1 - M2 | Motorways and fast roads | 2.00 - 1.50 cd/m² | ≥ 0.40 |
| M3 - M4 | Main urban roads | 1.00 - 0.75 cd/m² | ≥ 0.40 |
| P1 - P2 | Pedestrian areas / Cycle lanes | 15.00 - 10.00 lux | ≥ 0.30 |
| C1 - C2 | Conflict areas (Junctions) | 30.00 - 20.00 lux | ≥ 0.40 |
Smart City Ready (Zhaga/NEMA Connectivity)
High-performance road luminaires are ready for smart management through the integration of Zhaga Book 18 or NEMA 7-pin sockets. This allows "plug & play" installation of telemanagement nodes for real-time monitoring, geolocated fault reporting and dynamic control via LoRaWAN, NB-IoT or PLC protocols.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Road Lighting
What is point-to-point telemanagement and what savings does it bring?
Telemanagement allows each luminaire to be controlled individually from a remote control centre. It allows light levels to be adjusted according to traffic sensors or time schedules, achieving additional savings of up to 30% over conventional LED and optimising maintenance routes by knowing the exact status of each piece of equipment.
Why is 2700K preferred in residential and road lighting?
Warm light (2700K) contains a lower proportion of blue wavelengths. This reduces Rayleigh glare (atmospheric scattering), is more respectful of the citizens' circadian rhythm and better complies with regulations protecting nocturnal biodiversity.
How important is the 'G' classification in road optics?
The G class measures luminous intensity at critical angles (above 70°-80°). A high G class (such as G6) indicates that the luminaire emits very little light towards the horizon, which reduces glare for the driver and significantly increases road safety.
