Technical Lighting for Retail and Shops: Colour Precision and Visual Performance
In the retail sector, lighting goes beyond mere visibility to become a strategic visual merchandising tool. Our solutions for retail lighting are designed to maximise the visual appeal of the product, articulate commercial spaces through contrast and ensure maximum energy efficiency (lm/W) to reduce the operating costs (OPEX) of installations.
High-Fidelity Technical Specifications
For a retail project to meet the demands of interior designers and window dressers, we integrate luminaires with state-of-the-art optoelectronic components:
- Advanced Colour Metrics (TM-30-15): Beyond the standard CRI (Ra > 90/95), we evaluate our light sources under the TM-30 metric, ensuring optimal fidelity (Rf) and saturation (Rg) values. We place particular emphasis on the R9 > 80 (saturated reds) value, a critical parameter for the correct perception of textiles, cosmetics and fresh products.
- Colour Consistency (Binning): We use LED chips with a maximum tolerance of 2 to 3 MacAdam ellipses (SDCM < 3). This guarantees that there are no perceptible tonal deviations between different spotlights over time, maintaining a uniform brand image.
- Photometric Control and Optics: We offer interchangeable lenses and reflectors of high purity. From intensive beams (Super Spot at 8° to 15°) for high contrast in shop windows, to extensive beams (Flood and Wide Flood > 40°) for wall washing, always maintaining strict glare control (UGR).
Spectral Solutions by Product Type (Food & Fashion)
The emission spectrum of the luminaire must be adapted to the nature of the displayed product. We use specific spectra (modified-phosphor LEDs) to enhance the intrinsic characteristics of each material:
Retail Application and Colour Temperature Table
| Sector / Product | Colour Temperature (CCT) | Critical Parameter | Recommended Optic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion and Textile | 3000K - 4000K | CRI > 90 / High R9 | Spot (24°) / Flood (40°) |
| Jewellery and Watchmaking | 4000K - 6000K | Extreme brilliance and contrast | Super Spot (8° - 15°) |
| Bakery and Pâtisserie | 2500K - 2700K | Warm spectrum (Gold) | Flood (40°) |
| Food (Butchery) | Specific Spectrum (Pink) | Prevention of photodegradation | Asymmetric / Spot |
Structural Flexibility: Three-Phase Tracks and Control Protocols
The dynamic nature of retail demands adaptable infrastructure. The basis of our retail solutions are three-phase track lighting systems, which allow total configuration freedom.
For cutting-edge projects, we deploy low-voltage tracks (48V) or three-phase tracks compatible with DALI-2 dimming protocols. In addition, the integration of Casambi (Bluetooth Low Energy) nodes allows the store manager to modify lighting scenes, dim spotlights individually and adapt the layout to seasonal changes directly from a mobile device, with no need to modify the installation cabling.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Retail Lighting
What advantages does the TM-30 standard offer over the traditional CRI in a shop?
The traditional CRI (Ra) only evaluates light fidelity against 8 pastel colours. The TM-30-15 standard uses 99 real colour samples and introduces the gamut index (Rg), which measures saturation. This allows architects and lighting designers to know exactly whether a luminaire will make colours appear more vivid or more muted.
How is glare controlled in fitting rooms or checkout areas?
Visual comfort is key to customer retention. In areas where people linger, we use luminaires with deep anti-glare reflectors (recessed optics) and accessories such as honeycomb louvres or asymmetric visors (snoots) to direct light to the product while concealing the light source.
Do LEDs emit heat that could damage clothing or food?
Unlike halogens or metal halides, LED light does not emit infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the beam, preventing the fading of fabrics and the thermal deterioration of fresh foods. The heat generated is dissipated at the rear of the luminaire (aluminium heat sink).
