Lighting for Wet Areas: Tightness, Resistance and Electrical Safety

Lighting in areas with high levels of humidity, vapour or direct contact with water demands technical solutions that guarantee the integrity of the electronic components and the safety of users. A lighting project for wet areas must prioritise the IP (Ingress Protection) rating, corrosion resistance and the management of internal condensation, in compliance with the relevant electrical safety regulations and ensuring uninterrupted operation in the most adverse conditions.

Advanced Protection and Tightness Engineering

To prevent premature failures from short circuits or LED chip degradation, luminaires intended for humid environments integrate high-performance specifications:

  • IP65, IP66 and IP67 Protection Ratings: Our solutions provide certified hermetic sealing. While the IP65/IP66 rating guarantees protection against powerful water jets, the IP67 rating ensures tightness even against temporary immersion, making it ideal for areas at risk of flooding or intensive cleaning.
  • Non-Hygroscopic and Anti-Corrosive Materials: We use enclosures of UV-stabilised Polycarbonate (PC) or glass-reinforced polyester (GRP). These materials are inert to humidity and resist chemical corrosion in environments such as spas, industrial laundries or car wash tunnels.
  • Pressure-Equalising Valves: In environments with abrupt changes in temperature and humidity, the air inside the luminaire can expand and contract, creating a suction effect that draws in moisture. We deploy decompression valves that allow air to escape but block water ingress, eliminating internal condensation.
  • Thermal Management and Sealed Diffusers: The use of long-lasting silicone sealing gaskets and stainless steel closures ensures that the sealing pressure remains constant despite thermal stress.

Electrical Safety and Insulation Classification

In wet areas, the conductivity of water increases the electrical risk, making the luminaire's classification fundamental:

  1. Class II (Double Insulation): Recommended for environments where earthing may be deficient or in installations where an extra layer of safety against leakage is sought.
  2. Drivers with Surge Protection: Encapsulated power supplies that protect the system against voltage spikes and high ambient humidity.

Application Table by Tightness Rating

Protection Rating (IP)Resistance LevelRecommended Application

IP66Powerful water jetsWash bays, food industries
IP67Temporary immersion (1m)Flood-prone areas, swimming pool surrounds
IP68Permanent immersionFountains, swimming pool tanks, spas

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Wet Area Lighting

Why does condensation appear inside an IP66 luminaire?

Condensation is not usually due to a leak but to a physical phenomenon: the air trapped inside the luminaire contains moisture which, when the enclosure cools rapidly after switch-off, condenses into water droplets. To prevent this, our luminaires incorporate breather filters that equalise pressure and evacuate residual moisture without compromising the IP rating.

What is the difference between a Polycarbonate and a GRP luminaire?

Polycarbonate is ideal for its high impact resistance (IK10), but in environments with chemical agents or oil vapours, GRP (glass-reinforced polyester) offers superior chemical resistance, preventing the enclosure from becoming brittle or yellowing over time.

Is it necessary to use metal cable glands in humid environments?

To guarantee the IP rating, it is critical to use quality cable glands. In high-humidity environments, we recommend polyamide or stainless steel cable glands with a neoprene gasket to ensure that the cable entry point is as sealed as the rest of the luminaire, preventing water ingress through capillary action along the cabling.
