Sports Facility Lighting: Performance, Optical Precision and Visual Comfort

Lighting in sports environments is a defining factor for athlete safety, the spectator experience and the success of high-definition broadcasts. A high-end sports lighting project must be designed under the criteria of the EN 12193 standard, ensuring perfect uniformity, strict glare control (GR) and a light quality that meets national and international competition standards.

Engineering Specifications for Sports Performance

Lighting design for stadiums, sports halls and outdoor courts demands solutions that withstand intensive use and offer instant visual response:

  • Broadcast Quality (Flicker-Free and TLCI): In competition installations, the use of constant-current drivers with Flicker-Free technology is mandatory. This ensures the absence of black bands in high-speed (slow-motion) recordings and HD cameras. We also evaluate the TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) to guarantee that colour reproduction is optimal for professional camera sensors.
  • Glare Control (GR < 50): The Glare Rating in sports facilities is rigorously monitored. Through asymmetric optics and visors (snoots), we direct the luminous flux to the field of play, avoiding direct glare for players during aerial actions and for spectators in the stands.
  • Light Uniformity (Uo / U1 / U2): The standard requires high uniformity levels (up to 0.7 in Level I competitions) to eliminate shadow areas that may alter the perception of ball speed or athlete movement.
  • Robustness and Thermal Management: Luminaires with IP66 protection rating and IK10 impact resistance, fitted with high-conductivity heat sinks to maintain the LED's lifespan (L90B10) even under prolonged operation.

Level Classification according to EN 12193

Technical requirements vary significantly according to the level of competition and the presence of an audience:

Competition LevelType of ActivityAverage Illuminance (Em)Uniformity (Uo)CRI (Ra)
Level IHigh-level competition / TV broadcast500 - 1000+ lux≥ 0.70> 90
Level IIRegional competition / Clubs200 - 300 lux≥ 0.60> 80
Level IIITraining / Recreational use75 - 100 lux≥ 0.50> 70

Dynamism and Control: DALI and DMX Protocols

The digitalisation of sports lighting allows a functional venue to be transformed into a multipurpose entertainment space:

  1. DMX512 Protocol: Used in stadiums to create light shows, music synchronisation and dynamic effects during breaks or goal/point celebrations.
  2. DALI-2 Control: Enables zone dimming (e.g. half a court lit for training) and monitoring of consumption and floodlight status from a central management system.
  3. Instant Switch-On: Unlike old discharge lamps, LED enables immediate switch-on and re-strike at 100% flux, eliminating waiting times after supply faults.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Sports Lighting

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical illuminance in a stadium?

Horizontal illuminance (Eh) is the light falling on the ground, necessary for players to see the playing surface. Vertical illuminance (Ev) is the light that illuminates players and moving objects; it is critical for spectators and television cameras to perceive relief, faces and the trajectory of the ball in the air.

Why is surge protection (SPD) vital on lighting towers?

Floodlights installed on tall towers are vulnerable to atmospheric discharges (lightning). It is essential to integrate SPD devices of at least 10kV / 20kV to protect the driver electronics and prevent mass failures during electrical storms.

How does LED lighting help reduce the operating cost (OPEX) of a sports complex?

In addition to reducing electricity consumption by between 50% and 70%, LED eliminates the cost of periodic lamp replacement and the maintenance expenses associated with the use of cranes or lifting platforms, thanks to its lifespan of more than 50,000 - 100,000 hours.
